George began his walk at Tierra del Fuego
on the southern tip of South America
on January
26, 1977, and for the next seven years
hiked
northward, ending his journey at Prudhoe
Bay, AK on August 19, 1983, covering
19019
miles, a world record, on his hike.
Fifty-five
percent of George's miles were in Latin
America,
but seventy percent of his book dealt
with
that part of his trip. George did not
care
to camp out (he did not camp once between
Honduras and Banff National Park in
Canada),
so he usually stayed with people he
met along
the way or obtained a room. With his
limited
budget this caused him considerable
problems
after he left Latin America, and his
writings
did not show as much enthusiasm for
the trip
once he crossed the Rio Grande. Weather
conditions
required George to take a few layovers
(such
as over his last two winters in Canada).
Nevertheless, over the life of the
trip,
George's average trail distance was
eight
miles per day. Though he did not camp
out
much, he carried a complete set of
gear,
and he used a wheeled cart similar
to one
for golf clubs, to carry his gear and
provisions
rather than a pack. George's book is
illustrated
with several pages of black and white
photos.
